Free Zone Licence Renewal

Free Zone Licence Renewal in the UAE
What RAKEZ, Meydan, IFZA, DMCC and SHAMS Publish

Renewal is a date, not a suggestion. Each free zone sets its own fees and penalties, and most publish only part of the picture. Here is what each zone says on its own pages, what it leaves out, and what to ask for in writing before you pay.

Short answer

Renew your free zone licence on or before the expiry date on it. Each zone sets its own fees and penalties, and most publish only some of them. RAKEZ publishes a late renewal penalty of AED 50 per day. Meydan, IFZA and DMCC say late charges or sanctions apply but give no amount on the pages we read. Ask your zone for a written invoice, then renew before the date.

A Simple Order for Renewal

  1. Find the expiry date on the licence and in your zone portal, and set a reminder well before it.
  2. Ask your zone for a written renewal invoice. Include the licence, lease, Establishment Card or visa items, and any Chamber or third-party fees, so you see the full cost before you pay.
  3. Check the licensed activities still match what you do. Meydan advises dropping unused ones.
  4. Gather what the zone asks for. RAKEZ and DMCC publish document lists, such as insurance, NOCs, lease or Ejari, and shareholder papers. Corporate shareholder documents can need notarisation and legalisation (RAKEZ).
  5. Pay through the zone's portal and keep proof of payment.
  6. Share the renewed licence with your bank and update your contracts.
  7. If you no longer need the company, compare the renewal cost with the cost of closing it before you pay. Letting it lapse does not close it. See how to cancel a free zone company.

What Can Go Wrong

The date does not move

Meydan says a grace period is a window in which you can still renew, not extra validity. Do not trade on the expired licence while you sort it out.

Fines outside the zone

RAKEZ warns of third-party fines on the Immigration file, Chamber membership and the RAK DED licence. They sit outside the free zone and RAKEZ takes no responsibility for them.

Visas and bank follow the licence

IFZA says an expired licence can block visa renewals and that banks may ask for an updated licence and restrict accounts. Check both before the date, not after.

Late costs more

Meydan says reinstating a lapsed company usually costs more than renewing on time, and gives no figure. Ask for the number in writing.

Questions

Free Zone Licence Renewal FAQ

How much does it cost to renew a free zone licence in the UAE?

It depends on the zone, the licence type, the lease and the visas attached. RAKEZ, Meydan, IFZA and DMCC do not publish a single renewal fee on the pages we read. Ask your zone for a written invoice that lists every item before you pay.

Most zones say renew on or before expiry. Meydan advises starting before expiry so trading never pauses. RAKEZ accepts some changes, such as an activity change, only within 60 days before expiry. Ask your zone for its earliest renewal date.

Meydan and IFZA mention one without giving its length, and IFZA says it depends on the authority. Meydan says it is not extra validity. RAKEZ applies a penalty of AED 50 per day from the expiry date. Do not rely on a grace period.

Meydan says an expired licence should not be used: invoicing, new contracts and client onboarding carry risk. DMCC says a company must not operate in the free zone without a valid licence.

Not renewing does not close a company. Meydan and IFZA both say a lapse is not a closure and that a formal cancellation is needed. See how to cancel a free zone company.

No. Visas, the Establishment Card and the lease have their own steps. IFZA renews the Establishment Card every year and RAKEZ asks for Immigration e-Channel registration or renewal. Check them together.
