Family office

Family Office in Dubai
Structures, Regulators and How Setup Works

A family office centralises how a family manages its wealth. In Dubai it can sit in DIFC, ADGM or on a free zone or mainland licence, and the right choice depends on what the office will do. We handle the company setup and coordinate licensed legal and tax partners. We do not manage wealth or give investment advice.

By Imran Mirza, Founder & CEO, Xillion Group UAE. Born and raised in the UAE, with 18+ years of professional working experience, including nearly seven years at Barclays and ADCB and 12 years in UAE business setup. Last reviewed 29 October 2026.

Short answer

DIFC lists family office, foundation, holding company, managing office, proprietary investment company and special purpose vehicle (SPV) structures for families, and describes a family office as a way to centralise and professionalise family wealth management. Which regulator applies depends on what the office does, and we have not verified that for every case, so a licensed lawyer must confirm it before you commit. Costs are quote on request.

Who does the work

Xillion Group UAE is a business setup consultancy. It is not a law firm, a tax agent, a wealth manager or an investment adviser, and it holds no financial regulatory licence. Legal and tax advice is coordinated through independent licensed external professional partners, who are not Xillion employees. Regulators decide licences and approvals.

Xillion Group UAE is a consultancy. It is not a licensing authority, a bank or a law firm, and approvals are decided by the authority. This page is general information, not legal, tax or investment advice, and nothing here is a guarantee.

Who it is for

Who this page is for

  • Families moving wealth or residence to the UAE and wanting one place to run it.
  • Founders who have sold a business and want a structure for the proceeds.
  • Families with members in several countries who need one governance framework.
  • Owners who want an operating company, a holding company and a family vehicle clearly separated. See holding company.
  • Families also planning wills and succession. See family foundations, wills and succession.
Steps

How it works, step by step

  1. Set the goal. Who the office serves, what it will hold, whether it will employ staff, and whether it will manage only family money or also outside money. The last point usually changes the regulatory position.
  2. Legal and tax advice. Licensed partners advise on structure, tax residence of family members and the home-country position.
  3. Choose the venue. DIFC, ADGM, another free zone or mainland. DIFC published a foundation filing fee of USD 350 on its site on 26 October 2026. See DIFC and ADGM.
  4. Set up the entities. Foundation, company or SPV as advised, with registered address and, where needed, office space and staff visas.
  5. Banking and custody. Open the accounts. Banks ask for ownership, source of funds and the real activity of the structure. A holding with no staff or office gets extra questions.
  6. Residence and ongoing compliance. Family residence visas, accounting, audit and tax filings. See Golden Visa and accounting.
Documents

Documents usually asked for

  • Passports and Emirates IDs of family members, owners and signatories
  • Proof of address and source of funds and source of wealth
  • Family tree or ownership chart
  • Existing company and trust documents
  • Bank references
  • Business plan or description of what the office will do
  • Attested or translated documents where the zone asks

Your case may need more or less. We confirm the exact list with the authority or partner before you spend time on it.

Is a family office regulated in Dubai?

It depends on what the office does. We have not verified one rule for every case. A licensed lawyer must confirm the regulator for your plan before you set up.

Both have family structures. The right one depends on assets, activities, staff and advisers. Compare them with your lawyer. See our DIFC and ADGM pages.

No. We are not a wealth manager or investment adviser. We set up the structure and coordinate licensed advisers.

Not necessarily for a structure, but residence affects tax and banking. A tax partner should advise.

Quote on request. The DIFC foundation fee of USD 350 is only a filing fee.

Banks decide. Expect questions on ownership and source of wealth. See bank account.
