Business setup in Dubai for UK nationals

Business setup in Dubai for UK nationals

British founders are one of the biggest groups starting companies in Dubai. In 2025, 2,733 new companies from the United Kingdom joined Dubai Chamber of Commerce, fourth among all nationalities, according to the Chamber's own figures. Most general advice online is the same for everyone, though. This page focuses on what is different when you hold a UK passport, UK documents and UK bank accounts, and still have ties to HMRC.

Guide

Entering the UAE on a UK passport

UK government travel advice says British citizens get a free visitor visa at UAE immigration, with no need to apply in advance. Stays are capped at 90 days in any 180 day period, and your passport needs at least 6 months of validity on arrival. The same advice warns that working on a visit visa can lead to fines or worse, and that a residence visa requires a medical blood test. Check the current UK and UAE entry rules before you travel.

Some free zones, such as Meydan Free Zone, say you can form the company remotely, and you can come to Dubai later for your residence visa medical, Emirates ID and bank meetings. Once licensed, you can apply for a residence visa through the company, subject to authority approval. Investors and partners can also look at the 5 year Green visa, which needs no separate sponsor and allows family sponsorship, subject to approval. If your investment or profile is larger, see Golden Visa and try our Golden Visa eligibility check. For your spouse and children, see family visa.

Attesting your UK documents

The UK is a party to the Apostille Convention, and the HCCH status table shows it in force for the UK since 24 January 1965. That does not settle what the UAE accepts. UAE rules for foreign documents have been changing, and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs still lists attestation through UAE missions abroad for documents issued outside the UAE. Before you pay for any legalisation, confirm the current route with the UAE Embassy in London or with the authority that will receive the documents.

The Ministry also says original documents should be in Arabic or English, or come with a legally certified translation, and must not be laminated. Papers such as powers of attorney and UK parent company documents usually need to be notarised or certified before attestation, and each document type can have its own steps, so confirm them for your case.

You usually need attested documents for marriage and birth certificates (family visa), degrees (some visa and professional routes), UK company documents and powers of attorney. A personal shareholder normally starts with a passport copy. See our company formation document checklist.

Banking for UK founders

UAE banks apply the same core checks to everyone: who owns the company, what it does, where the funds come from and who you deal with. UK founders often have a clear paper trail, because UK bank statements, tax records and company filings are easy to read and easy to verify. Use them.

What tends to help:

  • an activity on the licence that matches your real business
  • source of funds evidence, such as UK bank statements, tax records, a pay slip history or a property sale completion statement
  • invoices or contracts with existing clients
  • a UAE residence visa and Emirates ID before you apply, which many banks prefer

Every account is subject to bank approval. Start with our UAE bank account readiness check and bank account guide. Tax: the UK UAE double tax agreement and UK residence

The UK and the UAE have a double taxation convention. HMRC records it as signed on 12 April 2016 and in force from 25 December 2016, with effect for taxes withheld at source from 1 January 2017 and for other taxes from tax years starting on or after that date.

On the UAE side, corporate tax is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above it, per the Ministry of Finance. A Qualifying Free Zone Person can benefit from 0% on qualifying income if it meets the conditions. See UAE corporate tax and VAT registration.

The bigger question for most British founders is UK tax residence. GOV.UK explains that residence is decided by the Statutory Residence Test, based mainly on days spent in the UK in the tax year (6 April to 5 April). UK residents are normally taxed on worldwide income, while non-residents are taxed only on UK income. The automatic overseas tests include spending fewer than 16 days in the UK, or fewer than 46 days if you were not UK resident in the previous three tax years, and other tests apply if you work full time abroad. Split-year treatment may apply in the year you move.

The UK also ended the old non-domicile regime from 6 April 2025, so the rules for foreign income of UK residents are different from before. Your UK tax position and where your company is actually managed from both matter. Please speak to a UK tax adviser before you start.

Funding the company and moving money

Share capital, set up costs and your first months of running costs usually come from your own funds. Banks on both sides will ask where the money came from, so keep the evidence ready: statements, tax records and the contract or sale document behind the funds. Talk to your UK bank early about large international transfers.

On the UAE side, the official banking page does not mention currency controls, and licensed exchange houses handle international transfers. Profits normally reach you as dividends from the company, then move to the UK like any other transfer. How the dividends are taxed in the UK depends on your residence, so take UK tax advice first.

UK and GCC trade agreement

The UK and the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes the UAE, concluded a free trade agreement on 20 May 2026, as reported by law and tax firms. It is not yet in force, because the legal text must be finalised and each party must complete ratification. Reported points include tariff cuts on UK goods, protections for services and financial services, and visa access for some business travellers.

Until it is in force, nothing changes in practice. If you trade goods between the UK and the Gulf, ask us how the current rules affect your product before you choose your structure.
